This whole group took rightness seriously,
and their hearts were incapable of immorality.
Just like that man Liuxia Hui
or the noble Di Renjie.
When the qi-vapors of a human amass,
one will have the position of high office.
These lines of text praise people who maintain their principles and refuse to compromise out of a desire to keep a high office. Such people will naturally rise to the top eventually. The "Analects" describes Liuxia Hui as one who continued to embrace the Dao even though he was dismissed from and returned to office three times. Espousing filial duty, Di Renjie was a trusted adviser to Tang Empress Wu, but he was still shuffled into seven different positions in just three years. With officialdom being one of the six realms of rebirth, here the scrolls are giving an optimistic word to the good who must make their own way through hell. Kuixing -- the deity who marks passing scores on the imperial examinations -- is once again present, foreshadowing a future life of bureaucratic success.
