This bibliography arose out of my study of the former priory church at Paray-le-Monial for my doctoral dissertation in art history at Yale University. I began this bibliography neither out of admiration of or because I think Conant was a great architectural historian (or what the French would call archéologue), but rather out of sheer frustration. Conant had an ability to present an idea in print and then change his mind about it in a later work without explanation, or citing evidence and often would do so without any reference to his earlier idea. Whether he was right or wrong in his conclusions Conant made Cluny his life project and those of us who follow him need to consider his ideas. I hope that what I have accumulated here helps make what he presented of this study in print more easily available to others.

I have gone to very great lengths to ensure that the bibliography is complete. I wish I were certain that it were so. At any rate, I have used the Art Index, RILA, Répetoire de Art et Archéologie, International Medieval Bibliography, the Musée d'Ochier at Cluny, the Departmental Archives of Saône-et-Loire in Mâcon, the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris, the Conant Archives in the Loeb Library at Harvard University, and the various electronic databases available on First Search and elsewhere, as well as other long forgotten sources. I would appreciate any corrections or references which have been omitted. I can be reached at mkerr@reed.edu.
