Reading the NY Times, Aug 13

"Reading the NY Times, Aug 13", Inkjet, 38x40 in and 38x20 in

The image was created by creating a software program that reads an online version of the NYTimes. The program analyzed the grammer of each sentence. From the structure of each sentence, the program extracted words that are relavant to the meaning of the sentence. Each word is represented by an elipse. The connection between the ellipses represent the semantic connection extracted from the grammer. The size of the elipse represents how many time it showed up in the paper. ("Mr" was the largest ellipse in the picture, and "Ms" was nowhere to be seen.) Each ellipse has a unique color. The legend is therefore used to decipher what words the ellipses represent..
