Course Description:
This is an advanced studio art class (aka critique class). I expect all of you to have the skills and the will to make work (this includes the skill to learn how to learn).

You will focus on and develop your own art work. I will not tell you what to do (although I'll be glad to make suggestions). Art is about coming up with your own projects and ideas. You are expected to make your own work and not your instructor's work.

I expect you to make work until you drop. I require full and total commitment to your work. I do not accept non-sense or excuses with regards to your work. I want you to make art all the time and make a lot of failures along the way. Otherwise I am flexible.

I take art seriously. You will be asked to take art seriously. This does not mean you need to make 'serious' art. Your art may be humorous. Your art may be about non-sense. If you do not believe in what you do, you will be asked to bang your head against a wall until you find a way out.You may spend the whole semester banging your head against a wall... That is fine. Art making is a rewarding but a frustrating process. Doubting or constantly questioning what you do is part of the art making process.

Some projects may take a long time to complete. Some may take multiple attempts to perfect. I may ask you to remake a piece over and over and over and over and over until we agree that it is done 'right'. Some projects may fail regardless. While I expect you to complete your projects during the semester, the emphasis is placed on the development of your project and how you mature as artists.

The success of this class depends on you. I will do my best to respond to your interests and needs. In exchange for your commitment to your own work, I'll be committed to helping you make work. You are encouraged to communicate your needs to me.
Schedule:
Progress Report: You will be asked to present work in progress (Schedule TBA). We'll talk about your work and the problems you may be having. This session is intended to facilitate the development of your work and to have the class provide feedback.

Critique: While this is an artificial and arbitrary assumption that you'll have something completed by/on this date, we'll pretend that these are your opening dates for your show. Put up a great show for the class.
Materials: You may use any medium you wish.

Evaluation: Make work. Make work for yourself (not for your instructor). Thoughtful work is good. Craft is important. Come to class. Participate. Work in class. Work out of class. Be responsible.
