Course Description:
Full course for one semester. An introduction to the concepts and
processes of studio art through drawing and other media. We will
explore traditional and non-traditional approaches used by artists to
serve their conceptual strategies.
Materials:
- 18x24 Newsprint:
- Start with one 100 sheet pad.
Most cost effective. For making quick studies
with dry media. Because of the residual acids left from the
manufacture, newsprints become brittle and yellow with age and
exposure to light.
- 18x24 Strathmore drawing pad / White drawing paper (70 or 80 lb):
- Start with one 25-30 pad.
- Sketchbook - your choice of size and format
-
- Compressed charcoal
- Square sticks. (If you like, you could also purchase charcoal pencils in addition to the square sticks. Pencils come in hard, medium, and soft).
- Vine charcoal and/or Willow charcoal
- Carbonized dried plant vines and willow tree branches.
- Graphite stick
- square sticks
- Drawing Pencil
- get couple from hard (HB) to soft (8B). For example: 8B, 7B, 6B, 4B, 2B, HB
FYI how pencils are rated: Softest 9B <----> B, HB, F, H, 2H <-----> 9H Hardest
- Pencil Sharpener
- Drawing room has one. If you want to work outside/home, nice to have. Make sure your pencil (or if you have charcoal pencils) fits.
- Non-permanent (water base) black felt-tip marker
- the bookstore has black Vis a Vis markers
- Kneaded eraser
- Eraser: white plastic eraser or pink pearl eraser
- Chamois
- Soft leather cloth, pronounced "shammy". Used to wipe away
sections of drawings or as a blending device.
- Drawing pad clips / Metal bull clips
- Portfolio
- Reddish accordion or rigid black cardboard styles
- Rulers
- at least 12 inches long
- Tool box, tackle box or shoe box
Optional:
- Charcoal fixative / Workable Fixative
- Comes in a spray can. Fixes charcoal on to paper.
- Scissors, Utility knife, X-acto knife.
-
- Glue stick
-
- White compressed charcoal or white conte crayon
-
- Black India ink
- Small jar. Would be convenient if you could directly dip your brush/crow-quill pens in jar.
- Small bamboo brush / Sumi ink brush
- Should be cheap. (Or get cheap ones).
- Drawing (Crow-quill) pen (aka Speedball pens) + couple of different nibs for drawing/cartooning.
- Looks like a fountain pen. Get a holder and nibs that go with it. You'll most likely find a package for drawing from Speedball. You could also get technical pens (eg. STAEDLER pigment liner: they look like regular pens and not fountain pens).
