Mathematical Graphics
The MSRI Summer School, Reed College
June 18 - July 2, 2005

This workshop will introduce sophisticated techniques of computer graphics for use to explain mathematics in research articles, course notes, and presentations. It will begin with an introduction to graphics algorithms, and the languages PostScript and Java. Participants will spend afternoons and evenings during the first week in the computer labs on assigned exercises. The second week will be spent on assigned project themes, ending with student presentations.

A series of public lectures will be held in conjunction with the school on work in mathematics that exemplify how mathematics informs and is informed by the production of mathematical pictures.

Directions to the Reed Campus

Detailed travel directions can be found on Reed's web pages or even more directly at this link.

For those of you coming from the airport: Last I've heard, a taxi ride from the airport to Reed is around $35.

I'd like to put in a plug for Portland's TriMet public transit system. It is quite nice, well-organized, comfortable, reliable, and convenient. The MAX light rail line runs regularly from the Airport to downtown Portland, costs $1.70. Downtown, there are two main streets devoted to all buses: SW 5th and 6th Ave. You'll want to catch the #19 (Woodstock) from 5th Ave. Get off at the 33rd Ave stop across from Reed's front lawn.

The #10 (Harold) runs more directly between downtown and Reed, though less regularly and not on Sundays. Get off at SE Steele St at Reed's athetic fields.

TriMet's web site is quite good.

Campus Orientation and Parking

Reed's campus is bisected into northern/southern halves by a game preserve area (the "canyon"). The northern part of campus contains the "cross canyon" residence halls where you'll be staying, namely Chittick and Woodbridge. There is free and ample parking (Steele East parking lot) serving those dorms. Your do not need a special pass.

The southern half contains the academic buildings, older dorms, and most of the school's facilities buildings, including the ETC (computing), Greywood (security and off-hours registration), Biology (lecture hall), Eliot Hall (the Visitor's Center), and the Grey Center (cafeteria, bookstore).

Check out this detailed campus map, complete with building index.

Registration, Residence Halls

For those of you arriving Saturday, June 18th and Sunday, June 19th: There will be a registration table set up at certain times outside the Chittick and Woodbridge residence halls (where you'll be staying) on the south side of campus. Here, you can pick up your room key, ID card key (for the computer labs), and registration packet and info. The registration table will be open:

  • Saturday: 2:30pm to 5:30pm
  • Sunday: 9am to noon; 2:30 to 5:30pm
Should you arrive any other times, you can pick up your packet from Campus Security at the Greywood building on the north side of campus.

If you plan to arrive earlier than noon Saturday or later than Sunday, please e-mail jimfix@reed.edu so we can make special arrangements.

Activities for when you Arrive

For those around on Sunday at 12:30, we've organized a trip to downtown Portland. Meet us then in front of Chittick dorm, next to the cross-canyon footbridge. We'll head out to see sights described below.

Portland is a fairly easy town to navigate by bus, bike, and foot. If you are looking for things to do once you arrive, I'd recommend taking a bus downtown and just walking around the city. Off the top of my head, you might consider

  • walking the the westside riverfront park and eastside esplanade looking over the Williamette River, which bisects Portland's downtown.
  • hiking around the West Hills which includes the Rose and Japanese gardens, Pittock mention, and miles of paths, with views of the city, Mt. Hood, and Mt. St. Helens.
  • Powell's Books at 10th and Burnside (huge, great!)
  • Powell's Technical Books at 9th and Burnside (also great!) Check their catalog at http://www.powellsbooks.com

A majority of Last school's participants learned about Portland too late in their stay. I'd encourage you to explore. Feel free to ask me for lots of suggestions for things to do.
