Abstract:
I'll explain how quadratic forms, quaternion algebras, conic
sections, and algebraic number theory's celebrated "class field
theory" are all connected by the so-called Brauer group. Along with
some history and many examples, I'll explain the role of the Brauer
group in Galois theory, number theory, geometry, and even string
theory.
