"Digitally motivated" transcendental numbers

R. E. Crandall
Vollum Adjunct Professor of Science, Reed College

Abstract: A new class of transcendental numbers was recently discovered via the analysis of bit patterns for algebraic numbers. The basic question is: How often do "1"s occur in the binary expansion of an algebraic number? The lecturer will describe how bounds on such 1-counts can be achieved, and how this leads to transcendency for certain expansions.
