On the Golbach Conjecture

Richard E. Crandall

In 1742 C. Goldbach wrote a letter to the eminent Euler, stating therein the celebrated "Goldbach conjecture," essentially that every even integer exceeding 2 is a sum of two primes. Here in 2001 this great conjecture remains unresolved. The lecturer will describe some modern approaches to the problem, including a certain fusion of number theory (mathematics) and signal processing (engineering/physics), applying not only to the Goldbach problem but to so-called "additive" problems in general.
