Raised Bed Gardens

What better way to eat locally, than to grow your own food?

This is Carey's back yard garden.  Although at 25 x 100 her lot is half the size of most Portland lots, she has a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers growing in her yard.  These photos were taken in early September showing a bountiful harvest of tomatoes, beets, carrots, parsnips, eggplant, cucumbers, zucchini, peas, basil, and kale.  Fruit production from Carey's garden includes apples, cherries, plums (for everybody Carey can find to give them to), rhubarb, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, huckleberries, and next year marionberries (a local variety of blackberry).

The raised beds in this garden come from:

Carey doesn't do all the gardening by herself.  She has a dear friend and gifted gardener named Summer who comes around a couple of times a week to work in the garden.  Carey's mom, Sandy, also comes into town during harvest and prepares some culinary delights for the whole family including eggplant parmesan with home made basil/ tomato sauce, zucchini bread, chocolate zucchini cake, and delicious carrot cake.

This is a wonderful example of living the life of eating local, slow foods.
